The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, is an account of God’s dealings with different groups of people who lived on the American continent. The history recounts how the people left Jerusalem, had prophets called of God, and were visited by Jesus Christ.

Translation from Gold Plates:

Joseph Smith was given, by the Angel Moroni, a set of gold plates which he translated by the power of God. These gold plates contained the history of an ancient civilization who lived upon the American continent and is called The Book of Mormon

History Begins with Nephi:

This history begins in 600 B.C. with the record of a man named Nephi, who writes: “I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days” (Book of Mormon: 1 Nephi 1:1).

People Leave Jerusalem for the Americas:

In The Book of Mormon Nephi recorded an account of his father, Lehi, who as a prophet of God was commanded to leave Jerusalem with a small group of people and travel to the Americas. The people grew into a great civilization called the Nephites and were taught by men called of God to be prophets. The prophets taught the people the commandments of God, His plan of salvation, and the mission of Jesus Christ.

Christ Visits the Americas:

Over 600 years later, Jesus Christ, as a resurrected being, appeared to the people of Nephi on the American continent: “And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying: Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning” (3 Nephi 11:9-11).

Christ Calls Disciples:

In The Book of Mormon we read how Christ taught the people His gospel, organized His church among them, and called twelve disciples to lead the people after His return to Heaven. As disciples these men are also considered prophets, seers, and revelators.

Mormon Abridges Words of Prophets:

Almost 400 years after Christ’s appearance, the Lord commanded a prophet, named Mormon, to make an abridgment of all the records of the prophets of the American continent. Mormon carved his abridgment onto plates made of gold in Reformed Egyptian, and it is he for whom The Book of Mormon is named.

Gold Plates Buried with a Promise:

The great civilization of people on the American continent became wicked, killed the prophets and all those who would not deny the Christ. There came a great apostasy, or falling away from the truth. The last prophet, Moroni the son of Mormon, was commanded to hide the gold plates in the ground where they laid undisturbed for over a thousand years. Before the plates were buried Moroni wrote a promise to us (Moroni 10:3-5) that if we would read, ponder, and pray about “these things” (The Book of Mormon) that we would know by the power of the Holy Ghost that they are true.

Angel Moroni Visits Joseph Smith:

Then in 1823 A.D. Moroni, as a resurrected being, appeared to Joseph Smith who was called of God to be a latter-day prophet. Moroni instructed Joseph Smith where to find the gold plates, which Joseph translated and then published in 1830. The Book of Mormon also contains the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and is a companion to the Bible.

My Personal Testimony:

I know The Book of Mormon is true. I have read it, I have prayed about it, and I have received a personal witness through the Holy Ghost, that it is true. Bible Prophecies of
The Book of Mormon
Another Testament of Jesus Christ

One stick for Judah which is the Bible and for Joseph one stick of Ephriam which is The Book of Mormon shall be one in the hand of the Lord. (Sticks, IE Scrolls of Scripture)

Ezekiel 37:15 – 19
15 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:
17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.
18 And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these?
19 Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand. 20 And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes.

2 Nephi 3:11 – 12
11 But a seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins; and unto him will I give power to bring forth my word unto the seed of thy loins-and not to the bringing forth my word only, saith the Lord, but to the convincing them of my word, which shall have already gone forth among them.
12 Wherefore, the fruit of thy loins shall write; and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord.

A people of Ariel (a reference to Jerusalem) is to be brought down, and will speak low out of the ground; The Book of Mormon people who came from Jerusalem were destroyed, yet their records were preserved (The Book of Mormon) and their testimony of Jesus Christ shall be as a familiar spirit.

Isaiah 29:4
4 And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.

2 Nephi 3:19 – 20
19 And the words which he shall write shall be the words which are expedient in my wisdom should go forth unto the fruit of thy loins. And it shall be as if the fruit of thy loins had cried unto them from the dust; for I know their faith.
20 And they shall cry from the dust; yea, even repentance unto their brethren, even after many generations have gone by them. And it shall come to pass that their cry shall go, even according to the simpleness of their words.

Vision of words of a book that is sealed; fulfilled in sealed portion of the Gold Plates of Mormon and the Martin Harris and Charles Anthon incident, in which the words of the book were taken to one who was learned.

Isaiah 29:11 – 14
11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

2 Nephi 27:15 – 20;
15 But behold, it shall come to pass that the Lord God shall say unto him to whom he shall deliver the book: Take these words which are not sealed and deliver them to another, that he may show them unto the learned, saying: Read this, I pray thee. And the learned shall say: Bring hither the book, and I will read them.
16 And now, because of the glory of the world and to get gain will they say this, and not for the glory of God.
17 And the man shall say: I cannot bring the book, for it is sealed.
18 Then shall the learned say: I cannot read it.
19 Wherefore it shall come to pass, that the Lord God will deliver again the book and the words thereof to him that is not learned; and the man that is not learned shall say: I am not learned.
20 Then shall the Lord God say unto him: The learned shall not read them, for they have rejected them, and I am able to do mine own work; wherefore thou shalt read the words which I shall give unto thee.

Joseph Smith History 1:63-65
63 Sometime in this month of February, the aforementioned Mr. Martin Harris came to our place, got the characters which I had drawn off the plates, and started with them to the city of New York. For what took place relative to him and the characters, I refer to his own account of the circumstances, as he related them to me after his return, which was as follows:
64 “I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated, and he said that they were Egyptian, Chaldaid, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He gave me a certificate, certifying to the people of Palmyra that they were true characters, and that the translation of such of them as had been translate was also corretc. I took the certificate and put it into my pocket, and was just leaving the house, when Mr. Anthon called me back, and asked me how the young man found out that there were gold plates in the place where he found them. I answered that an angel of God had revealed it unto him.
65 “He then said to me, ‘Let me see that certificate.’ I accordingly took it out of my pocket and gave it to him, when he took it and tore it to pieces, saying that there was no such thing now as ministering of angels, and that if I would bring the plates to him he would translate them. I informed him that part of the plates were sealed, and that I was forbidden to bring them. He replied, `I cannot read a sealed book.’ I left him and went to Dr. Mitchell, who sanctioned what Professor Anthon had said respecting both the characters and the translation.”

Joseph’s branches blessed above all others and to run over the wall and unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills.

Genesis 49:22 – 26
22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:
23 The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him:
24 But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
25 Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:
26 The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

2 Nephi 3:2 – 5
2 And may the Lord consecrate also unto thee this land, which is a most precious land, for thine inheritance and the inheritance of they seed with thy brethren, for they security forever, if it so be that ye shall keep the commandments of the Holy One of Israel.
3 And now, Joseph, my last-born, whom I have brought out of the wilderness of mine afflictions, may the Lord bless thee forever, for thy seed shall not utterly be destroyed.
4 For behold, thou art the fruit of my loins; and I am a descendant of Joseph who was carried captive into Egypt. And great were the covenants of the Lord which he made unto Joseph.
5 Wherefore, Joseph truly saw our day. And he obtained a promise of the Lord, that out of the fruit of his loins the Lord God would raise up a righteous branch unto the house of Israel; not the Messiah, but a branch which was to be broken off, nevertheless, to be remembered in the covenants of the Lord that the Messiah should be made manifest unto them in the latter days, in the spirit of power, unto the bringing of them out of darkness unto light–yea, out of hidden darkness and out of captivity unto freedom.

Other sheep not of the fold of Jerusalem will be visited by Christ.

John 10:16
16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

3 Nephi 15:11 – 24
11 And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words, he said unto those twelve whom he had chosen:
12 Ye are my disciples; and ye are a light unto this people, who are a remnant of the house of Joseph.
13 And behold, this is the land of your inheritance; and the Father hath given it unto you.
14 And not at any time hath the Father given me commandment that I should tell it unto your brethren at Jerusalem.
15 Neither at any time hath the Father given me commandment that I should tell unto them concerning the other tribes of the house of Israel, whom the Father hath led away out of the land.
16 This much did the Father command me, that I should tell unto them:
17 That other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
18 And now, because of stiffneckedness and unbelief they understood not my word; therefore I was commanded to say no more of the Father concerning this thing unto them.
19 But, verily, I say unto you that the Father hath commanded me, and I tell it unto you, that ye were separated from among them because of their iniquity; therefore it is because of their iniquity that they know not of you.
20 And verily, I say unto you again that the other tribes hath the Father separated from them; and it is because of their iniquity that they know not of them.
21 And verily I say unto you, that ye are they of whom I said: Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
22 And they understood me not, for they supposed it had been the Gentiles; for they understood not that the Gentiles should be converted through their preaching.
23 And they understood me not that I said they shall hear my voice; and they understood me not that the Gentiles should not at any time hear my voice–that I should not manifest myself unto them save it were by the Holy Ghost.
24 But behold, ye have both heard my voice, and seen me; and ye are my sheep, and ye are numbered among those whom the Father hath given me.

The Apostle John saw another angel flying through the midst of heaven carrying the everlasting gospel; this was the Angel Moroni, who gave the plates of the Book of Mormon containing the everlasting gospel to Joseph Smith to bring forth.

Revelation 14:6 – 7
6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Joseph Smith History 1:34
34 He said there was a book deposited, written upon gold plates, giving an account of the former inhabitants of this continent, and the source from whence they sprang. He also said that the fullness of the everlasting Gospel was contained in it, as delivered by the Savior to the ancient inhabitants;

What is the Book of Mormon?

bible_book_of_mormon

Though many people have heard of the Book of Mormon, most do not fully understand exactly what the Book of Mormon is. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) believe that along with the Bible, the Book of Mormon is the word of God.

We know that the Bible was written by ancient prophets and apostles in ancient Israel and the surrounding area. The Book of Mormon was also written by ancient prophets, though halfway across the world in ancient America. The Book of Mormon provides another testament of Jesus Christ and His Gospel.

Though some may question the need for another book of scripture, the Lord states in the Book of Mormon: “Know ye not that there are more nations than one? Know ye not that I, the Lord your God, have created all men, and that I remember those who are upon the isles of the sea; and that I rule in the heavens above and in the earth beneath; and I bring forth my word unto the children of men, yea, even upon all the nations of the earth?

“Wherefore murmur ye, because that ye shall receive more of my word? Know ye not that the testimony of two nations is a witness unto you that I am God, that I remember one nation like unto another? Wherefore, I speak the same words unto one nation like unto another.”

Obviously in ancient times, the words that were written in Israel by prophets and apostles could not be taught to those on other continents. Is it unreasonable that a loving and merciful God would reveal His truth to more than one nation?

A History of Two Nations

The Nephites and the Lamanites

The Book of Mormon begins approximately 600 B.C. with the story of Lehi, his family and a few others, who are instructed to leave Jerusalem. Led by the Lord, this group is eventually led across the ocean to the ancient Americas. On that land, the group eventually splits into two groups–the Nephites and the Lamanites.

The Book of Mormon records the history of these two nations over a period of approximately one thousand years, eventually finishing approximately 400 A.D. However, the crowning event of the Book of Mormon is the personal visitation and ministry of Jesus Christ. Following his resurrection and ascension into heaven in the Old World, Jesus Christ visits His disciples and believers in the New World.

Is the Book of Mormon true?

How can I know?

In the New Testament in John 14, Jesus taught: “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” Through prayer and the Comforter, or the Holy Ghost, each person may know for himself whether the Book of Mormon is the word of God.

Accordingly, at the end of the Book of Mormon, the final prophet Moroni is closing the record and shares a promise with future readers of the Book of Mormon:

“Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts. And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”

That is a powerful promise that if we read the Book of Mormon and pray with a sincere heart and real intent, God will answer our prayers whether the Book of Mormon is true.
